Digital Storyboard Script

Full Script

- “Hey All, My Name is Taylor Williams and my digital story will be about visual learning and visual representations, whether through diagrams, pictures, paraphrasing, color coded notes, flashcards, book annotating or anything other than technology. I’d like to say I’m very old-school, if I see strategies that work, I will use them forever. I don’t like to work harder if I don’t have to. My hope is that after watching this video you may be able to adopt some of the same study strategies if your looking for new ones, or add onto some of the same old strategies that are already working for you.”

- “This diagram is huge not only because it’s teaching you how to make your own, when note taking, but because it speaks volumes about different types of learners. Some of you may have a hard time identifying which type of learner you may be, or if you may have traits like myself, from both categories. This diagram shows both characteristics of visual and kinesthetic learners. I knew from the very beginning of going to school that I was mostly a visual learner and I worked best by doing: examples, pictures, charts, projects, etc. I also love this picture because it shows a lot of tactics that I myself use through graduate school and will talk about through this digital story. The arrow coming from the boy who represents our visual learner shows that he uses colors, pictures and structures, which are all things that I learn with and through. Another great example is shown in the arrow coming from the girl. She is our kinesthetic learner, she highlights and marks things off with check marks which are some of the same tactics that I use for studying as well. This picture really does a great job of bringing it all together.”

- “When you’re a visual learner like myself, you learn best when information is presented visually through images and graphs. We learn by reading or seeing pictures. We understand and remember things by sight. We can picture what we are learning in our head. We like to see what we are learning. Kinesthetic learners learn best when they can interact with their learning environment. Kinesthetic learning takes place when students have hands-on experiences. We can read or listen to instructions, but the real, deep learning occurs via the process of doing something yourself. When you can learn with these two tactics together, you are setting yourself up for success in the real world.”

-“The first step when indulging in this type of learning is making sure you have all the right materials. This part of the process can be very exciting and in the end always rewarding. It is important to make sure to color code all of your classes and make sure to have enough pen, marker and highlighter colors to last you the semester, another very essential supply to pick up is flashcards. Whether just white or colored, these also always make for good learning and studying.”

-“The next step in this learning process is the preparation for learning. It is crucial to make sure to have all of the required text and additional books to support your learning. Books were developed many many years ago and have been used to teach all of our professors everything they know. Once upon a time, I know this may sound crazy, but computers and internet access weren’t available for students. All references were found right here in the library, or even sometimes at the bookstores, used and new. One of my very favorite book stores to stop by and see if I can find supporting text for lessons or even just small tasks, and parenting especially, is Half Priced Books in Golden Gate, where you can literally find something about any and all topics, the prices and availability are phenomenal and is what keeps me coming back.”

- “There are many different study tactics that come with visual learning when it comes to note taking and note preparation for assignments, projects and papers. The real reason for the colors is so that you can easily find what you need when you go back to look at, use or study your notes.”

- “The next representation that I will show is book annotating. By annotating any text you are making sure that you understand what you read during and after you read what you read. That is a big struggle with using books that we all face. Sometimes our mind wanders off, we begin thinking about other things or just simply reading just to get through the reading. Book annotations allow us to really learn from and through the books. In these examples, you’ll see different ways to annotate text including use of highlighter tabs, highlighting, note cards and post it notes.”

- “This example shows the use of one highlighter and one pen to highlight important information and underline things we don’t understand or may need clarity on.”

- “When using some of these strategies you are guaranteed to see a jump in your grades. Some of the strategies shown and represented in this digital story really cause a student to fully indulge in their learning. Other strategies are picture note taking, the use of graphs and diagrams to show understanding and making an appealing study area. Book annotating in itself can cause grades to increase almost 30%. Thank you so much for watching my digital story and I hope you are just as excited as me to go revamp your study area, reading nook, and hit the store and start supplies shopping to show off your new visual learning expertise.”

- “I hope you enjoyed learning about some of my most favorite learning styles. It is my hope that some of these strategies you will one day take into your own classrooms and use throughout your own learning.”
